Whitening Your Teeth: At Home or at the Dentist?

Your teeth are losing their bright white shine and you’re considering whitening them. You’ve heard about bleach kits you can buy at a drugstore, but you also know your dentist does teeth bleaching. The real question is what is the difference?

Whitening at Home

There are many teeth whitening products on the market that you can purchase from your local drugstore. Whitening toothpastes and bleaching kits are available for purchase.

Whitening toothpastes vary depending on the brand and type. Some contain no bleach ingredients, but rather contain abrasive ingredients that reacts to lighten teeth and work well to remove surface stains, but cannot remove much more than that.

Other whitening toothpastes may contain some small chemical ingredient that acts to whiten teeth, but stay on teeth for a minimal time. This makes them less effective than stronger bleaching products, but also provides the least amount of risk of side effects.

Bleaching kits are slightly stronger and stay on teeth for a longer time. They often come with a one-size-fits-all tray that can result in chemicals leaking into your mouth if not used carefully. They also do not come with the benefit of a professional monitoring you for any adverse reaction or side effect that may arise from their use.

Whitening with the Dentist

Often, the dentist uses a stronger bleach than what is found in drugstore bleaching products. This usually allows them to be the most effective treatment option.

Whitening is also usually safer with a dentist. In-office procedures are available, as well as custom made trays to hold the bleach to your teeth, preventing the risk of potentially swallowing chemicals that may be harmful. Dental professionals are also trained in noticing side effects that are often reported when a patient undergoes bleaching in its earliest stages. This makes them capable of preventing or stopping any harm such side effects may cause.

Furthermore, long-term use of teeth whitening products and procedures may lead to teeth sensitivity or abrasion. Your dentist is most qualified to determine whether you should proceed with whitening your teeth or whether it may cause you unwanted side effects.
